An economics degree is still a relatively unknown concept in India, but it’s a trend that is slowly but surely catching on. In this article, we have alumni from Meghnad Desai Academy talking about their experiences and takeaways of studying economics at the institute.
The Meghnad Desai Academy has imparted value to me in more than one ways. Conversations with professors, interactions with external speakers and offline conversations with fellow classmates have helped me hone my thoughts and in that process find my path. The internship at the IDFC Institute particularly exposed me to the outside world and gave me a taste of what to expect once I pass out from the Academy. I’m confident of being more articulate and mature in both thought and action and credit the academy for playing an instrumental role in enabling me to rise to this juncture.
Mustafa Arif, Junior Economist, Australia New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ)
The Diploma Program at MDAE offers a combination of theoretical and applied classes which, in addition to providing the requisite understanding of economics, also honed my writing and analytical skills. The career services cell provides a host of services including resume building, mock interviews and networking opportunities which helped showcase my abilities to prospective employers. Additionally, the advice from my mentor and professors was invaluable in helping me start my career!
Akanksha Samdani, Project Holder, First Rand Bank
I joined MDAE because I wanted to learn from people who are experts in their field. Their experience has not only helped me to get a good command on subjects but also in the placement process. Apart from developing skills like communication, writing, quants, I have learned to be ethical and push myself under pressure. One very important thing which I have developed in past months is the habit of reading, the importance of which I realized while sitting for various interviews.
Archit Kaul, Project Holder, AON & First Rand Bank
I have been helping AON with research on the various organisational structures within Life Insurance firms. I will also be involved in a project related to the impact of new payment banks on the firms. On the other hand, I have been working on a research report on unique payment instruments with First Rand Bank. Internships with FirstRand and Aon Hewitt have helped me get a real feel of what happens in that Industry (Investment Banking and Consulting). The course has also helped me become aware of the various job opportunities which I particularly was unaware of previously like analytics, treasury, consulting roles.
Raj Kiran, Analyst, Dun & Bradstreet
The course was intensive and challenging and provided me with a solid theoretical and statistical foundation. My fondest memories of the course will be the sheer dedication and commitment of our lecturers. They established a dynamic learning environment that aimed to create confident and capable individuals through, diligence, teamwork, inquiry and participation. Also, the placement workshops and mock interviews have significantly improved my interviewing style.
